Important Things That You Should Know When Choosing Timber Doors for Your Home

by Benjamin Rice

If you are building a new home or renovating an old house, then wooden doors are a good option. Wood adds a lot of aesthetic value to the house because of the natural look and feeling that it creates. In addition, wooden doors can be fabricated to last a long time by preventing rot and warping. For you to get the most out of wooden doors, the following are some of the important things that you need to be aware of:

Solid and Hollow Wooden Doors

Timber doors can be either solid or hollow. Solid doors comprise layers of wood inside while hollow doors are made using wood panels, leaving gaps between them. This affects some of the qualities portrayed by the door that you choose. A good example of such qualities is the fire rating of the door. Since solid doors do not have gaps within the wooden material, then they will give you a better fire rating compared to the hollow doors. The gaps in hollow doors are filled with air, which accelerates the rate of burning whenever there is a fire breakout. This can make the fire spread rapidly to other sections in the house.

Pre-Finished Doors

Pre-finished doors come in handy when you are running out of time to finish your project. Pre-finished doors are designed to fit, fabricated and ready to be installed when need be. Often, there is no need for additional waxing or staining. If you decide to go for pre-finished doors in your home, you should check the manufacturer's paperwork to ascertain the stain, oil, varnish or wax that has been used to coat the door. If this information is not available in the paperwork, ask the manufacturer or seller. This information will help you when you are carrying out renovations in the future or when you need to repair the door in case of damage. Sometimes, mixing door stains, oil or varnish can ruin the aesthetics or quality of the wood.

Veneered Doors

If you go for veneered doors, you should be careful with the products that you use on the door. Veneered doors can have a hollow or solid wooden core. In most cases, the core comprises dense fibreboard or particleboard. Glue and other bonding agents are used to bind the core of the door to the wood. With varying types of cores and veneer thickness, you should pay attention to any manufacturer or seller labels that advise against particular wood finish products such as teak oil or Danish oil.
