How to find the perfect water pump for your bore

by Benjamin Rice

Do you know what you need to look for when you go to buy a new water pump? Buying the right bore pump to maintain your water supply is essential but unless you understand how water pumps work you could come back from your supplier with a piece of equipment that is completely unsuitable for your bore hole and will either struggle to maintain an adequate water supply or will fail much sooner than you expect. Don't forget that much of the expense of replacing a failed water pump comes from the installation costs so don't risk buying the wrong pump and being forced to replace it in only a few months.

What type of pump do you need?

Choosing a suitable pump is about a lot more than either buying the cheapest item on the shelf, or alternatively looking for the best known brand and trusting the manufacturer. Franklin Electric, Lorentz and Grundfos all make great bore pumps but there is no certainty that every one of their water pumps will work with your bore hole. If you take either of these approaches to purchasing you will almost certainly buy the wrong type of pump. You need to examine the suppliers stock of water pumps for one which has the right technical specifications for your needs.

How to choose the right pump

When looking through a selection of water pumps and trying to make an informed choice you need to be thinking about your water bore because the pump you choose must be matched with the bore. Using the wrong type of submersible pump simply won't work. If you are looking for a pump for a new bore hole then it makes sense to discuss your choice of pump with the company you have hired to do the boring. They will have all the technical specifications you need to select a matching pump and will probably be able to suggest exactly the right pump for your needs.

If you are purchasing a replacement pump for an existing water bore then take note of your existing pump and purchase a pump with similar specifications, or if that isn't possible, get your bore hole measured for depth before you go out and look for a new pump.

Choosing replacement water pumps doesn't have to be hard but it does mean understanding the relationship between your bore hole and your pump and ensuring that they are properly matched.
