3 Things You Should Know Before Basement Drilling Begins

by Benjamin Rice

There are times when you may consider hiring basement drilling contractors. This drilling is usually related to issues with drainage in the basement due to flooding. If you are experiencing these issues, and you need drilling completed, then there are some things you should know first. Here are three things to know before basement drilling begins in your home.

Weep Wells

The first thing to know is that basement drilling may consist of drilling weep wells in the basement walls. These weep wells allow any condensation and rainwater to flow away from the basement and out to the ground outside. With the proper irrigation and drainage, the water that drains from the weep wells can flow away from the house reducing the chances of more flooding occuring around the foundation.

French Drain

If weeping wells do not work, or have not worked in the past, you can opt to have a french drain placed. This drain requires direct basement drilling into the floor of the basement. A drain is then placed over the hole area to allow the water to drain out, into plumbing that leads directly outside and away from the home. In some cases, you may have both weep wells in the walls and a french drain placed as well. If the basement is large, you may have more than one drain placed.

Waterproofing

You will still need to waterproof the basement, even with the weep wells and possible french drain in place. Even though the drainage holes that were completed by the basement drilling contractor, the area itself needs to be sealed against water damage, cracking, and break down. You can do this yourself with waterproofing and sealant from your local home improvement store. You can also have a painting contractor apply the waterproofing and seal as well. This will need to be done shortly after the drilling has taken place in order to seal the freshly drilled holes.

These are only three things you should know before basement drilling begins. If you have questions or if you aren't sure that basement drilling is an ideal option, contact your local contractor. They can answer further questions you may have. They can also help with pricing and scheduling. They can also offer a consultation to view your specific drainage issues first hand and determine if there are other drilling options that may help you in the long term instead of just giving you a quick fix to your problem.
